Candle & Fragrance Safety
Last updated: May 2026
All Claudi's candles are flammable consumer products. Please read these instructions before lighting your first candle. Following them protects you, your home, and ensures the best burn from every pour.
Before you light
- Trim the wick to 5mm before every burn — including the first. Long wicks cause smoking, uneven burn, and overheating.
- Place the candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from edges.
- Keep away from draughts, fans, and air vents — uneven airflow causes uneven burning.
- Remove all packaging, labels, and decorations before lighting.
The first burn (memory burn)
The first burn is the most important. Allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the vessel before extinguishing — this sets the wax's "memory" and prevents tunnelling on future burns. For our 200ml tumblers this takes approximately 2–3 hours.
While burning
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets at all times.
- Do not burn for more than 4 hours at a time. Extinguish, allow to cool completely, re-trim the wick, then relight.
- Keep the wax pool clear of wick trimmings, matches, and debris — these are fire hazards.
- Burn in a well-ventilated room. Prolonged burning in a sealed space without airflow is not recommended.
- Do not move a burning candle — the wax and vessel will be hot.
Surface protection
Candle vessels become hot during use. Always burn on a heat-resistant coaster or trivet. Do not place directly on wood, plastic, or polished surfaces. The heat from the vessel can cause permanent damage to surfaces beneath.
When to stop burning
- Stop burning when 10mm of wax remains at the base of the vessel. Burning below this level overheats the glass and may cause cracking.
- If the flame becomes unusually large, smoking, or flickering repeatedly — extinguish immediately. Allow to cool, trim the wick, and relight.
- Discontinue use if the vessel is cracked, chipped, or damaged in any way.
Extinguishing safely
Use a candle snuffer or gently dip the wick into the melted wax pool and straighten it — this prevents smoking. Do not blow out candles near curtains, fabric, or flammable materials. Do not use water to extinguish.
Storage
Store candles away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and high humidity. Direct sun will fade fragrance and discolour wax. Ideal storage temperature is 15–25°C. Keep lids on when not in use to protect the fragrance and prevent dust accumulation.
Diffusers
Keep reed and plug diffusers away from direct sunlight and heat sources, which accelerate evaporation. Keep out of reach of children and pets — diffuser oils are not for consumption and may irritate skin and eyes on direct contact. If skin contact occurs, wash thoroughly with soap and water.
Wax melts
Use only with a purpose-built wax melt warmer with a tea light or electric element. Never melt wax directly over an open flame or hob. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Melted wax is hot — do not touch the wax pool while it is liquid.
